Last Diary entry

19th October 2009

With the Open Space Programme drawing to a close, it's time for us to put up a final entry and a little bit of news about the future.

We're currently working on a CD of the various mixes from each town. You can find some snippets of theses below for you to listen to. Unfortunately 'feelsound' can't be guaranteed via a website (depends on your speakers), but you may get some unexpected results.

We'd like to once again say thanks to all the people who helped us with donations, information, feedback, vehicle loan...too many to list. Many members of the public gave over their time, resources and local knowledge to help us realise the project, for which we are very grateful.

Thanks also go to William Monte for his design of the Cube, R P Carter for building the Cube, Louise at The Sign Factory for free graphics and Martin Astell at the Sound Archive for his neverending support.

Although this is the close of the Open Space programme, life for the Cube itself will go on. It has been invited to be installed at the newly opened CoExist Gallery at TAP, in Southend. We thought it would be a great opportunity to start the process again, collecting sounds and recordings, this time for Southend and its surrounding Borough. Vibe Cube at Essex Sound Archive

19th August 2009

Today we set up the cube at Essex Record Office, home of the Sound Archive which has contributed so much to the project.

The cube is located just outside the public search room at the top of the stairs/lift and we hope it will give visitors an insight into the breadth of the archive's holdings, as well as a new insight into the sounds of Essex.

Special thanks to Martin Astell, Sound Archivist, who has supported every stage of the project, up to and including getting the cube to the first floor!

Colchester Talk

25th July 2009

We invited people along for an informal talk about the Cube, to ask questions and interact with the Cube at Colchester's Les Livres Gallery. Some interesting topics of conversation emerged, including acousmatic sound (sounds you hear without having a visual source to identify them; is it a doorbell, is it an archive recording of a bus bell? No it's a chime recorded at Tymperley's clock Museum) and the origins (noise cancellation research in helicopters and tanks) and benefits for deaf people (wider tactile frequency range) of NXT technology.

Colchester installation

22nd July 2009

This week the Cube heads to Colchester, complete with a new mix.

The Colchester mix adds contemporary and archival sounds, including a 1906 recording of Charles Benham's poem 'New Fangled Ways', donated recordings of the Edwardian Moot Hall organ in Colchester (sadly no longer in use) and our 2009 recording of six bells from St Martin's Belltower, Basildon (originally from St Nicholas in Colchester, demolished in 1955).

We're also at the gallery on Saturday 25th for an informal chat - come along if you'd like to know more about the project, the recordings, or have thoughts about other sounds we should include.

Harlow Library - Talk + other photos

25th June 2009

A few people attended the informal talk given by Stuart on 25th, which is documented here. Also are a few photos taken over the weekend by Martin Figura

Harlow Installation

24th June 2009

Today was the second installation of the Vibe Cube, this time in Harlow library. So, here are a few photos of how it looked, just after setting up. It includes a new detail, the hand, and also a new, updated sound mix including some new sounds recorded and received since the Basildon install.

We'd like to express our thanks for all the Staff at the library for welcoming the project and helping us with the set up.

Wivenhoe

25th May 2009

I was invited to perform at the Wivenhoe May Fair, so thought I’d make a day of it and travel up early. So I wandered about town for a few hours making some recordings and taking pictures. Very nice indeed. In the afternoon I met up with my friends and went to the fair, and also managed to make a few more recordings of the cacophony of sounds there.

GIFT Workshop Colchester

23rd May 2009

Today we attended the GIFT Workshop at St.Martins Church in Colchester. This is a project run by the Mercury Theatre; a journey of discovery about Colchester through its people, with participants collaborating to create work in response to their discoveries - a great project for Vibe Cube to connect to. We followed the groups around town on tours given by volunteers and learned about peoples views on the town, its spaces and other inhabitants, as well as making some sound recordings of places in the town we hadn't yet visited.

We'd like to thanks Rebecca and Tony from the Mercury, plus all the participants and tour guides for letting us tag along.

Basildon

16th May 2009

Today was the third day of the Vibe Cube installation in the Basildon Centre, and we invited a few friends and dignitaries along for an informal chat and a chance to see and interact with the Cube.

It was good to see the Cube being listened to, touched and enjoyed, especially by Tony the security guard who was happily singing along to all the Christmas carols when they were playing.

We'll create a new mix for June, when the Cube goes on show in Harlow; keep sending us your ideas and sounds.

Basildon Installation

14th May 2009

Today is the first time the Cube is in the public domain, at the Basildon Centre on St.Martin's Square. Please feel free to pop in and touch it, listen it, experience it. If you can't make it, here are a few photographs we took after installing it last night.

Also, we'd like to express our thanks for all the Staff at the Basildon Centre for welcoming the project and being so supportive of it.
